Rotate vs. flip

Rotating turns the whole picture around its centre. Use the 90° buttons for photos taken sideways or upside down, or drag sideways on the image — or use the rotation slider — to turn it to any angle and fix a tilted horizon. Rotating by 90° swaps the width and height.

When you rotate by an angle that isn't a multiple of 90°, the corners of the canvas are left empty. “Trim empty corners” (on by default) crops them away so the picture fills the frame; turn it off to keep the whole image with transparent corners — or white ones if you save as JPG.

Flipping mirrors the picture. A horizontal flip swaps left and right — handy for selfies that look reversed. A vertical flip turns the image upside down like a reflection in water.

Rotating in 90° steps moves every pixel to a new position without changing it, so there is no blur. Other angles are resampled with high-quality smoothing.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my photo sideways?

Phones store the camera's orientation as a hidden tag instead of turning the pixels. Some apps and websites ignore that tag, so the photo appears sideways. Rotating it here turns the pixels themselves, so it displays correctly everywhere.

Does rotating reduce image quality?

Rotating by 90° or 180° and flipping are lossless operations on the pixels. Other angles are smoothed at high quality. PNG stays lossless, and JPG and WebP are saved at high quality.

How do I straighten a crooked photo?

Open the Rotate tab and drag the rotation slider until the horizon lines up with the grid. The empty corners are trimmed automatically, so the photo still fills the frame.

How do I mirror a selfie?

Use “Flip horizontal”. It swaps left and right, so text and faces look the way they did in real life.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. PixStrong processes your images directly in your browser. Your files never leave your device and we never see them.

Does PixStrong remove photo metadata (EXIF)?

Yes. The new image is drawn from the pixels only, so EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location is not copied into the file you download. The photo's rotation is applied first, so it still displays the right way up.

Can I rotate by a custom angle, like 45°?

Yes. Drag on the image to rotate it freely, type an exact angle such as 12.5°, or use the 360° rotation slider. Hold Shift while dragging to snap to 15° steps.
