Which output format should I choose?

Auto is the best choice for most images. Photos stay JPG, images with transparency become WebP (or PNG if your browser can't create WebP), and flat graphics become JPG.

WebP usually gives the smallest files and is supported by all modern browsers. JPG is the most compatible choice for email, forms and older apps. PNG is lossless, so it keeps every pixel but rarely gets much smaller.

Smaller images load faster, use less mobile data and are easier to send by email or upload to forms with a size limit. For websites, compressed images improve page speed — and page speed helps your search rankings.

Frequently asked questions

Will compressing reduce image quality?

Compression removes detail the eye barely notices. At “Balanced” most photos look the same while becoming several times smaller. Use “Higher quality” if you need to preserve fine detail.

How do I reduce an image's file size for email or an online form?

Compress it with “Smaller file” and choose JPG or WebP. If it's still too big, make it smaller with the Resize Image tool first — fewer pixels means a much smaller file.

Why is my compressed image not smaller?

Some images are already well optimized. Converting a JPG to PNG also makes it larger, because PNG is lossless. Try “Smaller file” or the WebP format for the biggest savings.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. PixStrong processes your images directly in your browser. Your files never leave your device and we never see them.

Does PixStrong remove photo metadata (EXIF)?

Yes. The new image is drawn from the pixels only, so EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location is not copied into the file you download. The photo's rotation is applied first, so it still displays the right way up.

Is there a file size limit?

You can compress images up to 50 MB each. Very large photos may be too big for some phones; a desktop browser can handle more.
